Scientific maritime expeditions in the 18th and 19th centuries worked in tandem with developing scholarly societies in European countries open to the Atlantic. The French Académie de Marine, founded in 1752, brings together, like its foreign partners, navigators, constructors, hydrographers, ethnologists and other researchers active in these specialized exchange networks.
The meeting recalls this founding period.
